LEADERSHIP AND DATA SCIENCE
At UMD, I aim to expand my base of knowledge in data science, namely artificial intelligence, and mathematics as well as my network in this field. In addition, I aim to strengthen and broaden my toolbox of interpersonal skills. My field (data science) is in its infancy relative to its sister CS subfields.
The world needs leaders proficient at disseminating new technology and streamlining new ideas to the swathes of tech consumers and to future professionals in the field. As our society increasingly relies on technology with big data innovations accelerating this change, there are increasing ethical dilemmas such as data privacy.
I chose Public Leadership because the tenets of leadership (initiative and innovation used to effectively solve community problems) that the program focuses on developing are essential for prospective data scientists.
Also, the role of a pluralistic society affects the way language and information is transmitted and perceived, which has large implications for the growth of artificial intelligence. As a result, the field is composed of specialists of various backgrounds and identities. Finally, organizational leadership theory will be directly applicable to data scientists as one’s team is vital to productivity.
At PL, I will supplement the technical skills I learn at university with interpersonal and social wisdom that will be essential for my future as a data scientist.
